Lesson: The Radical Legacy of MLK

$18.75

Radical Legacy of MLK is a 50-minute Ethnic Studies lesson for grades 6–12 that centers Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s radical commitments to economic justice, civil disobedience, and collective liberation. Through media, discussion, and reflection, students examine counter-narratives and articulate their own visions for a just future.

Description

Radical Legacy of MLK challenges simplified, sanitized narratives of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by centering his radical commitments to economic justice, labor rights, and systemic change. Grounded in Ethnic Studies and counter-narrative pedagogy, this lesson supports students in understanding Dr. King not only as a civil rights leader, but as a radical advocate for justice whose work remains deeply relevant today.

Designed for grades 6–12, this 50-minute lesson uses whole-group discourse, media analysis, and structured reflection to examine Dr. King’s legacy. Students engage with the Black National Anthem through video and lyrics (Part 1, page 3), explore key academic and Ethnic Studies vocabulary such as radical, civil disobedience, economic justice, and socioeconomic status (page 3), and analyze video clips that highlight Dr. King’s organizing around labor and economic equity—including the sanitation workers’ strike.

The lesson culminates in a reflective activity where students create Commitment Cards, articulating their own commitments to justice, equity, or community care (Part 4, page 3). A Spanish-language version of the Commitment Cards is included to support accessibility (page 4). An optional Kahoot review and extension activities allow educators to adapt pacing and depth based on classroom needs.

Throughout the lesson, educators are supported with slide-based directions and minimal preparation requirements, making this lesson accessible while still addressing complex historical and contemporary issues.
