Description
Showcase and Reflection is the emotional and academic climax of the Lyrics and Liberation journey. This lesson shifts the classroom into a gallery and performance space, allowing students to go public with the social justice themes they’ve investigated. It is a celebration of student agency, centered on the belief that liberation is a collective process, not an individual one.
The lesson begins with a focused Open Write to distill the core theme of their work. Students then move into a Small Group Showcase, a structured peer-review format where they share excerpts of their lyrics or playlists while their peers provide active-listening feedback using the Showcase Peer Group Handout. The session is designed to be inclusive and flexible, allowing for community and family involvement to further validate the students’ work.
The unit concludes with a Final Reflection that moves beyond the classroom, asking students to articulate how their understanding of music has shifted and how they will continue to advocate for social change in their daily lives.
