Free: Heroes of Color Block Party Lesson Plan

$0.00

Students explore overlooked heroes of color, with an emphasis on women and youth, who resisted systemic oppression throughout history. Through counternarratives, discussion, and interactive learning, they reframe the concept of “American heroes” to center voices erased by dominant narratives.

Description

Heroes of Color is a middle school Ethnic Studies lesson WAESN’s forthcoming From Mesopotamia to Minneapolis: Examining the Rule of Law unit, the sequel to Human Rights and the Rule of Law. Designed to help students critically analyze how race, gender, and power shape historical memory, this lesson invites learners to engage with the stories of resistance and liberation from historically marginalized communities. Using counternarratives, collaborative discussion, and the “Block Party” learning strategy, students uncover the contributions of Asian American, Black, Latinx, and Native American heroes often omitted from traditional curricula.

Rooted in anti-racist pedagogy and aligned with WAESN’s Elements of Liberation framework, this lesson fosters critical thinking, empathy, and civic awareness to help empower students to recognize and challenge systemic oppression in both history and the present.
