Personal Timeline – Identity, Community, and Belonging (Grades 3–5)
The Personal Timeline lesson invites students to explore who they are in relation to their families, cultures, and communities. Rooted in Ethnic Studies and SEL practices, this lesson helps young learners understand identity as both personal and communal while building foundational skills in reflection, observation, and storytelling.
Designed for grades 3–5, this flexible 30-minute lesson (with an optional 15-minute extension) guides educators through a thoughtful sequence of activities using GLAD Observation Charts, partner discussion, and creative expression. Students analyze images representing diverse families, community life, personal assets, and cultural wealth, then apply those insights to begin creating their own personal timelines.
Through educator modeling and scaffolded discussion, students identify meaningful moments in their lives—past, present, and emerging—while honoring multiple ways of defining family, belonging, and identity. The lesson intentionally centers inclusivity, encouraging representations beyond traditional narratives, including chosen family, LGBTQ+ families, foster and group homes, and community networks.
