Liberating through Creating is the rehearsal before the grand finale of the Lyrics and Liberation unit. This lesson is strategically designed to build the community of practice necessary for students to feel safe sharing their authentic voices. It moves the classroom dynamic from teacher-guided instruction to student-led intellectual and creative exchange.
Targeted at 5th–8th grade ELA classrooms, the lesson begins with a Whole-Class Discussion where students lead the conversation, posing questions to one another about their creative choices and the social issues they are tackling. The core of the lesson is a 15-minute intensive Work Time session, allowing students to finalize their original lyrics or curate their Social Justice Playlists.
The session concludes with a powerful, community-centered reflection that prepares students for the vulnerability of presenting. Students assess their own comfort levels with sharing and brainstorm ways to uplift their peers’ work through compliments and critical questions, ensuring a supportive environment for the upcoming final presentations.
