Lesson: Hammurabi’s Court Simulation

Hammurabi’s Court Simulation brings the brutal reality of ancient justice to life. As the investigative climax of the Human Rights and the Rule of Law unit, this lesson moves beyond reading about the past to experiencing the power dynamics of the first codified laws.

In this simulation, every student is assigned a secret identity and a corresponding crime or judgment. As the judge reads the codes, students must face their fate—some finding protection under the law, while others are sent to the classroom graveyard. This experiential approach invites students to confront the intersection of gender, social class, and the law.

The lesson concludes with a leveled reflection (Newbie, Level Up, and Boss Level) that challenges students to analyze how Hammurabi’s Code served as a tool for maintaining a rigid social hierarchy and a patriarchal society.
