SUMMARY:June Member Appreciation: Tide Pool Walk with Alma Ramiro Alonzo
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate our WAESN community\, we invite our members to join us on June 13th (8:45 AM orientation\, 9:00 AM walk) for a morning of fresh air and coastal discovery at Golden Gardens Park in Seattle! \nWe are thrilled to be guided by Alma Ramiro Alonzo\, a local artist\, educator\, and 20+ year PNW resident with a lifelong passion for nature journaling and coastal foraging. \nCome and explore the intertidal zone\, the area of the beach that plays “peek-a-boo” during the changes in the tides. The intertidal zone is a vital marine ecosystem populated by many fascinating organisms like sea stars\, clams\, crabs\, sea cucumbers\, the electric Thick-horned nudibranch\, comical sea lemon\, and awe-inspiring moon snail. \nOur exploration will begin at the nearshore\, with a brief orientation covering beach etiquette\, safety\, and\, in broad terms\, the beach’s ecological significance and cultural history.  The first hour is a guided exploration where we will take our time to discover\, ponder\, identify\, and appreciate some nerdy facts about the organisms that interest us.  The second hour is an invitation to explore freely\, while your guide remains available if you have questions. \nThroughout\, we will practice exploring with kindness\, empathy\, and wonder. \nCheck out her Instagram for more information: @alma_ramiro_alonzo_art \nSpace is limited\, so please register today to save your spot and let us celebrate the amazing community you help build! \nWhere:  \nGolden Gardens Park (near the bathhouse) \n8498 Seaview Pl NW \nSeattle\, WA 98117 \nWhen: \nJune 13\, 2026 \nCheck-in time and orientation at 8:45am sharp or we miss the tide pools! \nWhat: \nCheck the weather and dress appropriately with nonslip shoes. We will also send updates closer to the event. \nBring your camera\, your watercolors\, your chalk and pencils\, whatever you need or want to record nature’s lessons. \nCost: \nK–12 students (ages 0-18) & Sustaining Members (monthly donors to WAESN) are free! \nCollege & University students register for $15. \nGeneral registration is $25.

SUMMARY:Youth Power Lab
DESCRIPTION:Youth Power Lab: Leading the Next Wave of Ethnic Studies and Racial Justice \nThe Youth Power Lab is Washington Ethnic Studies Now’s (WAESN) newest statewide initiative designed to build a powerful\, coordinated network of youth leaders advancing Ethnic Studies and racial justice in K–12 education. Rooted in WAESN’s multigenerational\, majority POC-led mission\, this program is a community-rooted leadership pipeline that transforms volunteer advocacy into sustained\, impactful work. \nWhat You’ll Gain: \n\nStructural Support & Mentorship: Young leaders\, despite their expertise and lived experience\, often lack the infrastructure to sustain their advocacy. The Lab fills this gap by providing structured training\, a dedicated Youth Coordinator\, and mentorship from near-peer coaches (recent graduates and young educators).\nSkill Development: Participants will receive in-depth training in:\n\nAdvocacy and policy influence\nFacilitation skills for community education\nDigital literacy skills\nCommunity-based research practices\n\n\nReal-World Impact: Over the course of the program\, youth leaders will be actively involved in systemic change:\n\nDesigning and facilitating community education sessions.\nLeading intergenerational forums.\nOrganizing statewide campaigns to counter misinformation about Ethnic Studies.\nInfluencing local and state policy (e.g.\, through testimony and district commitments).\n\n\nTangible Connections:\n\nStudents who complete the program will receive a free laptop.\nParticipants will be connected to various youth-led organizations where they can continue to grow their leadership skills and advocate for social changes they are passionate about.\n\n\n\nBy resourcing and amplifying the leadership of young people most impacted by inequities\, the Youth Power Lab transforms Ethnic Studies from curriculum into action\, offering a sustainable model for civic leadership and advancing racial justice across Washington State. \nProgram Details: \nParticipants are expected to attend both weeks. \n\nWeek 1 (July 20-24): Inatai Foundation Seattle Office\, Rainier Tower\, 1301 5th Ave #2600\, Seattle\, WA 98101\nWeek 2 (July 27-31): Estelita’s Library\, Beacon Hill\, 2901 17th Ave S\, Seattle\, WA 98144\nTime: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

SUMMARY:Summer Institute
DESCRIPTION:WAESN Summer Institute: Foundations of Ethical & Liberatory Ethnic Studies Instruction\nThe WAESN Summer Institute is a five-day\, immersive professional learning experience for K–12 educators committed to implementing Ethnic Studies with integrity\, rigor\, and accountability. \nDesigned around WAESN Modules 1–3\, the Institute establishes the foundational mindset\, pedagogies\, and content knowledge required to teach Ethnic Studies as more than a course—as an orientation\, a framework\, and a liberatory way of teaching and learning. \nThrough a pan–Ethnic Studies approach\, educators engage with Black\, Chicanx/Latinx\, Asian American\, Pacific Islander\, and Filipinx Studies while learning how to apply these disciplinary areas across grade levels and subject areas. \nParticipants examine the historical roots of race and racism\, engage with Indigenous epistemologies such as Nahui Ollin and Sankofa\, and strengthen pedagogical practices that resist curriculum violence\, cultural appropriation\, and deficit-based narratives. \nThe Institute emphasizes: \n\n\nMindset → Pedagogies → Content \n\n\nFugitive\, community-rooted\, and anti-racist teaching practices \n\n\nYouth partnership and leadership \n\n\nReflective practice through affinity-based spaces \n\n\nEducators spend the week learning from scholars\, youth leaders\, cultural workers\, and WAESN facilitators while participating in interactive modules\, reflective dialogue\, and collaborative problem-solving. \nBy the End of the Institute\, Educators Will:\n\n\nUnderstand the foundations and purpose of Ethnic Studies \n\n\nBuild confidence teaching intersecting racial and ethnic histories \n\n\nApply Indigenous and decolonizing frameworks to instruction \n\n\nDevelop pedagogical approaches aligned with Ethnic Studies values \n\n\nIntegrate WAESN frameworks and content into their classrooms \n\n\nJoin a statewide community of educators committed to justice-centered education \n\n\nRegistration Includes:\n\n\nFive days of immersive professional learning \n\n\nUp to 36 clock hours \n\n\nSynchronous WAESN Modules 1–3 \n\nAsynchronous WAESN Modules 4-9\n\nOne free WAESN Ethnic Studies lesson plan \n\n\nConnection to a growing statewide Ethnic Studies educator network \n\n\nThis Institute is ideal for educators\, instructional leaders\, and district teams seeking deep\, principled Ethnic Studies professional learning grounded in community\, care\, and accountability. \nLocation: \nNew Freeway Hall (Columbia City) \n5018 Rainier Ave S \nSeattle\, WA 98118
